Greater Sulphur Cockatoo
The Greater Sulphur Cockatoo, also know as the Gallerita Gallerita Cockatoo, is the largest of the Sulphur Crested
Cockatoos. With a total length of 20-22 inches, this Sulphur Crested Cockatoo is as large as a Moluccan Cockatoo. Its plumage is primarily white, with yellowish ear patches, and a forward-curving narrow yellow crest. The undersides of the wing and tail feathers are yellow, and the eye ring is naked and white. This sub-species of the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos is one of the least common, and demands a much higher price than most of the cockatoos. The Triton Cockatoo,
Triton Gallerita, is sometimes called a Greater Sulphur, but the Triton Cockatoo is smaller and has a blue eye ring.
Because of the large size and higher intelligence of this Cockatoo, it is very often trained to perform in circuses, and for TV and movie appearances. One of the more well known of these cockatoos was Fred who was owned by the detective Baretta.
As with most of the Cockatoo species, the Greater Sulphur Cockatoo is an affectionate pet and must be taught independence as a youngster. If spoiled, they can be very loud in a screaming demand for attention.
